British Shorthairs are one of the oldest registered pedigreed breeds, traced back to Roman times as favored European housecats.
Their strong hunting skills made them prized ship’s cats, protecting food stores on voyages for British sailors.
They have a notably unflappable disposition. The breed standard describes them as “amiable, quiet, gentle, placid and adaptable.
British Shorthairs have endearingly full faces and bodies. But overfeeding causes unhealthy obesity, so manage their diet.
Their large, copper or gold eyes stand out against thick fur. But blue eyes indicate potential hearing problems.
Only 25% of British Shorthairs sport the iconic bright blue coat. Other “tweeds” include black, red, cream and silver.
With excellent care, British Shorthairs often live to 14-20 years old, some even longer as one of the healthier breeds.
