Pick a gentle, tear-free shampoo made for dogs. Avoid human shampoos which can dry out dog skin. Look for soothing oatmeal formulas.
Bath your dog in a walk-in shower or use a hose outside. Place a non-slip mat down to avoid falls. Have towels ready nearby.
Use a spray nozzle and lukewarm water. Wet your dog's body while avoiding the face and ears early on.
Rub shampoo thoroughly over your dog's body, legs, and paws. Carefully clean the face last using a wet washcloth.
Rinse all traces of shampoo away. Soap left behind can cause skin irritation. Double check armpits and groin area.
Gently squeeze excess water out of the coat then pat dry with a towel. Use a second dry towel to finish removal of moisture.
Speak soothingly, give treats, and cuddle your dog during and after the bath to ease stress. Play calming music to mask scary noises.
