Tips for Understanding Catnip's Effects on Cats

Catnip is an herb from the mint family. It contains a chemical that triggers euphoric reactions in 2/3 of cats when smelled or eaten

Catnip

Rolling, licking, chewing catnip toys, hyperactivity, playfulness aggression, vocalizing - these instinctual reactions last 5-15 minutes.

Common Reactions

Big Cat species respond powerfully to catnip which supports why domestic cats inherited this genetic trait and unique sensory reaction.

Genetic Response

Catnip is non-addictive and safe. Feed dried leaves or catnip toys in moderation to avoid stomach upsets from overindulging.

Catnip Safety

Start with 1 pinch of dried catnip. Adjust amount based on your cat's size and reaction. Give another dose only after euphoric effects wear off.

Proper Dosage

Do not give the concentrated catnip oil extract. This can cause negative health effects in cats unlike the natural dried herb.

Avoid Essential Oil

Kittens under 6 months old typically do not react to catnip. Their sense and response develops as they mature.
