How To Properly Pick Up and Hold A Cat

Always approach slowly and let kitty see and sniff you first before attempts to pick up to avoid startling them.

Move Slowly

Support your cat's full weight by placing one hand under the front legs and another under hindquarters when lifting off the ground.

Use Two Hands

Keep your cat's body and legs contained against your chest while carrying to make them feel stable, secure and less likely to squirm free.

Restrict Movement

Watch for signs of discomfort like thrashing, meowing, hissing, stiffening up. Respect their boundaries and put them down if they resist.

Pay Attention

Adjust your grip if needed so no body parts are awkwardly hanging unsupported which can harm or scare a cat.

Proper Support

Refrain from holding cats with their legs pinned down or their body suspended painfully. They should feel fully sustained.

Avoid Restraint

Crouch low to the ground when placing cats down for safety. Never drop or carelessly handle felines.
