Tips for Training Dogs to Walk on Leashes

Choose leashes between 4-6 feet to begin training, using thicker leather for powerful pullers yet avoiding chain or rope leads.

Use Proper Equipment

Puppies drag lightweight leashes around the house first associating them with safety before adding outdoor distractions.

Practice Indoors First

Praise and treat your dog for glancing at you, heels aligned properly, or slack appearing in the leash as reinforcement.

Desired Positions

Halt forward motion or abruptly switch directions in response to leash tension, repeating until the dog chooses to release pulling.

Stop on Pulling

Pair “Yes” praise with loose leash rewards meanwhile say “Oops” or “Ah Ah” to signal unwanted strain then pause or turn instead.

Use Verbal Cues

Keep early leash training sessions very brief with young puppies, focusing on only a few quality repetitions per walk.

Practice Short Sessions

Leash habits develop over extensive conditioning requiring many months, so remain calm and steady without yelling when distracted.

Stay Patient
