Tips for Training Your Cat to Use the Litter Box

Place litter boxes in quiet, easily accessed spots in your home. Avoid loud machines that may startle cats while eliminating.

Location

Provide at least one litter box per cat, plus one extra. This abundance reduces conflicts and makes cleanup easier.

Number of Boxes

Select a leakproof box, large enough for your cat. Lower rim entry helps accessibility. Some cats prefer hooded privacy while others dislike confined space.

Box Type

Use a premium clumping litter with excellent odor control and quick clump function. Avoid scented options.

 Litter Selection

Scoop solid waste twice per day. Empty litter completely every 2-3 weeks with mild soap and water. Replace worn boxes annually.

Cleanliness

Go slow when switching litter brands. Mix old and new litter together, gradually increasing proportions of new litter over 2 weeks.

Transition Tips

Place cats in litter box and praise immediately after they use it. Discreetly offer treats. Say cue words like “good litter box”.
